Veritas Mk.II Power Sharpening System

The sharpening system can be used to sharpen a full range of tools. For illustration, we show a plane blade being sharpened.

Sharpening a Tool

The sharpening process is fast and consistent. The basic sharpening steps are outlined below.

1) Start with the 4mm platter and 80x disc to hone the primary bevel.

Photo 1 – Begin with the blade poised above the platten, then bring it into contact. Apply light downward pressure on the blade to grind the bevel. Use consistent pressure to grind the bevel, monitoring the blade temparture with the fingers.

2) Once the the primary bevel is ground evenly, simply flip the platter over to use the 150x disc for polishing the primary bevel.

3) Once the primary bevel is polished, it will look like the image below. Note that it is not critical for the primary bevel to be polilsed all the way to the heel, since it’s the very tip that does the cutting. A small inconsistency in the with of the polished surface is also acceptable.

4) After polishing the bevel, install the 3mm platter with 1200x disc to hone a micro-bevel.

Photo 5 – Hone the blade for a just few seconds on the 1200x disc to produce a micro-bevel.

5) In the final step, remove the wire edge on the 1200x disc.

6) The final result – a sharp edge, ready to go to work. To renew its keenness, simply touch up the micro bevel and test for a burr. If a burr is present, a few seconds of polishing the back of the blade removes it. To re-establish the primary bevel, simply go back to the 80x face of the 4mm platter.
